The two organizations share MIT origins but do not share common control, and are legally and operationally distinct today, with separate leadership and separate websites. The Engine launched in 2017 as an integrated platform combining a venture capital arm with an incubator and accelerator, founded at MIT's initiative under then-President Rafael Reif and led by Israel Ruiz, with Katie Rae appointed CEO and Managing Partner that same year. In 2023, the venture capital arm split off to become an independent firm, Engine Ventures. The Engine continues on as a separate non-profit incubator and accelerator, offering lab, engineering, and office space along with programming for early-stage Tough Tech companies.

Companies resident in The Engine's incubator and accelerator programs are not Engine Ventures necessarily portfolio companies. The two lists are distinct: residency at The Engine is not required for, and does not imply, investment by Engine Ventures, and vice versa.
