David is an Operating Partner at Engine Ventures, where he works closely with tough-tech founders navigating the complex journey from breakthrough science to commercial scale. He brings nearly two decades of deep technical and leadership experience in the sector.
Previously, David co-founded Ambri, an MIT spin-out based on his PhD research, to develop and commercialize the Liquid Metal Battery technology for grid-scale energy storage. Starting as CTO and later transitioning to CEO, he led all major company functions — including product roadmapping, IP, budgeting, fundraising, team building, cell development, systems engineering, manufacturing, and EHS. The company raised nearly $300M in funding from investors including Bill Gates, Paulson & Co, and Fortistar.
David holds a BSc in Engineering Physics from Queen's University, and an MEng and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT. He was also named to the MIT Technology Review TR35 list, recognizing him as one of the world's top innovators under 35.
